Isotopic Tracer Infusion

Isotopic tracer infusion is a quantitative research method that uses molecules labeled with rare or detectable isotopes to measure physiological and metabolic processes in vivo. During a controlled infusion, the tracer mixes with the body’s endogenous pool, and changes in isotope enrichment are measured in blood or tissues using techniques such as mass spectrometry; mathematical models then estimate rates of production, uptake, synthesis, or breakdown. In medicine, this approach can quantify glucose turnover, fatty-acid metabolism, protein synthesis, and drug disposition, providing mechanistic insight into metabolic disease, nutrition, pharmacology, and treatment responses.

Elements: Chemical Symbols and Isotopes

2020

A chemical symbol is an abbreviation used to indicate an element or an atom of an element. For example, the symbol for mercury is Hg. The same symbol is used to indicate one atom of mercury (microscopic domain) or to label a container of many atoms of the element mercury (macroscopic domain). Some symbols are derived from the common English name of the element; others are abbreviations of the name in another language — Latin, Greek or German. For example, the symbol for aluminum (common name)...

In order to study brain reorganization under pathological conditions we used miniosmotic pumps for direct protein delivery into the brain circumventing the blood brain barrier. Tract tracers are then injected to study alterations in brain connectivity under the influence of the protein.

Workflow Based on the Combination of Isotopic Tracer Experiments to Investigate Microbial Metabolism of Multiple Nutrient Sources
