Non-invasive Pain Treatment

Non-invasive pain treatment comprises approaches that reduce pain without surgery, implanted devices, or penetration of the skin, making symptom management possible while limiting procedural risk. These treatments work through different mechanisms: transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) activates peripheral sensory nerves to influence pain signaling, while exercise, heat or cold, and cognitive-behavioral strategies can alter muscle function, tissue sensitivity, or pain perception. In medicine, clinicians select and combine these options according to pain type, duration, severity, and patient needs, using them for conditions such as musculoskeletal pain, arthritis, and some chronic pain syndromes; outcomes can include improved function, mobility, and quality of life.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...

The transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) in the supraspinal region has been suggested to play some roles in the brain function. Described here is a protocol for intracerebroventricular injection of resiniferatoxin for supraspinal TRPV1 desensitization in mice. Procedures for some pain tests are also presented.

Diffuse noxious inhibitory control, temporal summation and wound hyperalgesia testing are demonstrated in the obstetric patient. These tests evaluate inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms of pain processing and are here utilized to evaluate endogenous analgesia at different time-points during pregnancy and the peripartum period to help reveal individual s risk for persistent pain.
