Organ Chamber Perfusion

Organ chamber perfusion is an ex vivo technique that maintains an isolated organ or tissue in a controlled chamber, allowing its function and responses to be studied outside the body. A circulating perfusate delivers oxygen, nutrients, and experimental compounds through the organ’s vascular network while researchers regulate temperature, pressure, flow, and other physiological conditions. In medicine, this approach supports organ preservation and viability assessment before transplantation, while also enabling studies of injury, repair, disease mechanisms, and drug effects. By separating organ function from whole-body influences, organ chamber perfusion provides a controlled platform for translational research and therapeutic development.

Factors Affecting Drug Distribution: Organ Perfusion Rate

2025

Drug distribution within the body is a complex process influenced by several factors, including perfusion rate, the rate at which the bloodstream transports drugs to tissue. This limitation becomes particularly significant when dealing with highly lipophilic drugs. In such cases, the rate at which the drug can move across membranes is crucial, and if the membrane is highly permeable to the drug, distribution becomes rate-limited by perfusion. Perfusion rate-limited distribution relies on the...

Innovative Strategies for Organ Preservation in Heart Transplantation: Uniform Cooling Preservation and Ex-situ Normothermic Perfusion

2025

Donor heart preservation is a major determinant of success in heart transplantation. Technological advances have led to optimizing the conditions of preservation, along with a more accurate assessment of the donor heart before transplantation. We herein describe two innovative technologies currently applied for cardiac preservation: uniform cooling preservation and normothermic ex-situ heart perfusion.
