Oxygen Glucose Deprivation

Oxygen Glucose Deprivation (OGD) is an experimental model that simulates ischemic conditions by limiting oxygen and glucose availability to cells or tissues, helping researchers study injury caused by interrupted blood flow. During OGD, reduced oxygen impairs mitochondrial respiration while glucose depletion restricts ATP production, disrupting ion balance, membrane function, and cellular survival pathways. In medicine, this model is widely used to investigate ischemic stroke, heart and brain injury, and neurovascular responses, often followed by reoxygenation and nutrient restoration to represent reperfusion. OGD supports evaluation of protective treatments, disease mechanisms, and cellular recovery after ischemia.

(2015).The video demonstrates the impact of oxygen-glucose deprivation and subsequent reoxygenation on rat brain microvascular endothelial cells (RBMECs) by simulating hypoxic and nutrient-deprived conditions. These conditions result in ATP depletion, increased intracellular calcium, and the generation of reactive...

Ischemia-Reperfusion (IR) injury is associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. The goal of the in vitro model of oxygen-glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGD-R) described here is to assess the effects of ischemia reperfusion injury on a variety of cells, particularly in blood-brain barrier (BBB) endothelial cells.
