Porcine Model Injury

Porcine model injury refers to the use of pigs to reproduce and study human injuries in a controlled biomedical setting, supporting translation from laboratory research to clinical medicine. Researchers create defined injury conditions and monitor resulting physiological, anatomical, and histological responses over time, using the pig’s body size and organ systems to evaluate injury progression and repair. These models support preclinical testing of surgical techniques, medical devices, wound treatments, and regenerative therapies while enabling repeated sampling and clinically relevant outcome measurements. By connecting experimental interventions with tissue-level and whole-body responses, porcine injury research helps assess safety, effectiveness, and translational potential before human studies.

Athletes absorb several hundred mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI)/concussions every year; however, the consequence of these on the brain is poorly understood. Therefore, an animal model of single and repetitive mTBI that consistently replicates clinically relevant symptoms provides the means to advance the study of mTBI and concussion.
