Pulmonary Physiology

Pulmonary physiology is the study of how the lungs and respiratory system move air, exchange gases, and maintain internal oxygen and carbon dioxide balance, making it central to normal body function and clinical medicine. Ventilation carries air to the alveoli, where differences in partial pressure drive oxygen diffusion into pulmonary capillaries and carbon dioxide diffusion outward; perfusion then distributes oxygenated blood through the circulation. Understanding these coordinated processes, along with airway resistance, lung compliance, and ventilation-perfusion matching, helps clinicians interpret pulmonary function tests, recognize respiratory disorders, and assess responses to treatment. It also supports research into anesthesia, critical care, exercise, and chronic lung disease.

Imaging Ca2+ Signals in Small Pulmonary Veins at Physiological Intraluminal Pressures

2025

In this protocol, we present a novel technique for recording and analyzing Ca2+ signals in intrapulmonary veins (small pulmonary veins or PVs) at physiological intraluminal pressures. The technique involves isolating small PVs, incubating them with a Ca2+ indicator, cannulating and pressurizing them, confocal imaging of Ca2+ signals, and data analysis.

The following protocol describes the methodology for the acquisition and analysis of echocardiographic images used to obtain the Left Atrial Volume (LAV), Aorta (Ao) diameter, and Pulmonary Artery (PA) diameter in mice. This technique is a non-invasive, non-terminal procedure that allows assessment of the cardiopulmonary function.

Homeostasis Conditions in the external environment of an organism can change rapidly and drastically. To survive, organisms must maintain a fairly constant internal environment, which involves continuous regulation of temperature, pH, and other factors. This balanced state is known as homeostasis, which describes the processes by which organisms maintain their optimal internal conditions. To maintain homeostasis, organisms have developed structures with distinct functions. Physiology is the...

Pressure Fixation of Isolated Murine Pulmonary Valve: A Procedure to Isolate and Chemically Fix the Mouse Pulmonary Valve in Closed Conformation

In this video, we describe the procedure to isolate and chemically fix the mouse pulmonary value in closed conformation via perfusion pressurization.

Catheter-based Endovascular Angioplasty for Fibrosing Mediastinitis-associated Pulmonary Vein Stenosis

2025

Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a life-threatening complication of fibrosing mediastinitis (FM), with a poor prognosis if not properly treated. Currently, catheter-based endovascular angioplasty is a promising therapeutic strategy for FM-associated PVS. This protocol primarily outlines a stepwise approach to the transcatheter procedure for FM-associated PVS.
