Septal Cartilage Preservation

Septal cartilage preservation is a surgical approach that maintains the structural and functional integrity of nasal septal cartilage during septoplasty and rhinoplasty. Rather than removing cartilage extensively, surgeons preserve key dorsal and caudal portions, often called the L-strut, while elevating mucoperichondrial flaps and selectively correcting deviated areas. This strategy helps maintain nasal dorsum and tip support, reduce the risk of postoperative deformity such as saddle nose, and protect airway function. Septal cartilage preservation also retains graft material that may support reconstruction or aesthetic refinement, making it important in functional nasal surgery and complex revision procedures.

This protocol describes in detail how to specifically transfect different regions in the C57BL/6 central nervous system via in utero electroporation. Included in this protocol are detailed instructions for transfections of regions that develop into the cortex, hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, lateral septal nucleus and striatum.
