Vascular Function Imaging

Vascular Function Imaging is a group of noninvasive and minimally invasive methods that assess how blood vessels carry blood and respond to physiological or pharmacological stimuli, providing information beyond vessel anatomy. These techniques use Doppler shifts, contrast-agent kinetics, or magnetic resonance signals to measure changes in blood flow, perfusion, vessel diameter, and endothelial reactivity over time. In medicine, vascular function imaging supports evaluation of atherosclerosis, hypertension, ischemia, stroke risk, and treatment response, while helping researchers connect altered hemodynamics with disease mechanisms and improve patient stratification.

Changes in ovarian blood flow during the preovulatory period are essential for ovulation. Doppler ultrasonography has been used in humans and large animals to assess ovarian hemodynamics and perfusion. A protocol is presented for applying Doppler ultrasonography to evaluate ovarian hemodynamics during the preovulatory and periovulatory phases in mice.
