Genetic Reporter Mice

Genetic reporter mice are genetically engineered animals that make specific cells, genes, or biological events visible through an inserted reporter gene, providing a powerful way to study living tissues. In neuroscience, regulatory DNA or recombinase systems such as Cre-lox target reporters to defined cell populations, where fluorescent proteins or enzyme-based markers reveal gene expression, cell lineage, or neural activity. Researchers use these models to identify neuronal subtypes, map circuits, trace projections, and monitor cellular responses during development, disease, or behavior. By linking molecular events to anatomy and function, genetic reporter mice support precise analysis of brain organization and mechanisms underlying neurological disorders.

The microinjection of mouse oocytes is commonly used for both classic transgenesis (i.e., the random integration of transgenes) and CRISPR-mediated gene targeting. This protocol reviews the latest developments in microinjection, with a particular emphasis on quality control and genotyping strategies.

An Overview of Genetic Engineering

2023

Genetic engineering – the process of purposefully altering an organism’s DNA – has been used to create powerful research tools and model organisms, and has also seen many agricultural applications. However, in order to engineer traits to tackle complex agricultural problems such as stress tolerance, or to realize the promise of gene therapy for treating human diseases, further advances in the field are still needed. Important considerations include the safe and efficient delivery of genetic...

An Introduction to Developmental Genetics

2023

Development is the complex process through which a single-celled embryo transforms into a multicellular organism. Developmental processes are guided by information encoded in an organism's DNA, and geneticists are trying to understand how this information leads to a fully formed organism. This video reviews seminal research in the field of developmental biology, including the identification of specific genes that control various embryonic processes. An introduction to the major questions asked...

Genetic Crosses

2023

To dissect genetic processes or create organisms with novel suites of traits, scientists can perform genetic crosses, or the purposeful mating of two organisms. The recombination of parental genetic material in the offspring allows researchers to deduce the functions, interactions, and locations of genes. This video will examine how genetic crosses were influential in developing Mendel's three laws of inheritance, which form the basis of our understanding of genetics. One genetic crossing...
