Noninvasive Brain Stimulation

Noninvasive brain stimulation is a group of techniques that alter brain activity without surgery, making it valuable for studying neural function and developing therapeutic interventions. Methods such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial electrical stimulation deliver magnetic pulses or weak electrical currents through the scalp to influence neuronal membrane potentials and circuit excitability. In neuroscience, these approaches help researchers test causal relationships between brain regions and behavior while supporting investigations of motor control, cognition, mood, and neurological disorders. Their reversibility and relatively low physical burden also make them useful for repeated experiments and personalized treatment research.

Resting-state functional-connectivity MRI has identified abnormalities in patients with a wide range of neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy due to malformations of cortical development. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in combination with EEG can demonstrate that patients with epilepsy have cortical hyperexcitability in regions with abnormal connectivity.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a technique for non-invasively disrupting neural information processing and measuring its effect on behavior. When TMS interferes with a task, it indicates that the stimulated brain region is necessary for normal task performance, allowing one to systematically relate brain regions to cognitive functions.
