Rfid Transponder

An RFID transponder is a radio-frequency identification device that stores and communicates a digital identifier, enabling objects, animals, or instruments to be recognized without a direct line-of-sight connection. In a passive tag, an RFID reader emits radio waves that induce electrical power in the transponder’s antenna; the chip then modulates and backscatters the signal with its encoded information, while active tags use an internal battery to transmit over greater distances. In neuroscience research, RFID transponders support longitudinal identification and tracking of laboratory animals, experimental materials, and research devices, helping connect behavioral or physiological measurements to individual subjects while improving data organization, reproducibility, and study management.

Loss of the righting reflex has long served as a standard behavioral surrogate for unconsciousness, also called hypnosis, in laboratory animals. Alterations in volatile anesthetic sensitivity caused by pharmacological interventions can be detected with a carefully controlled high-throughput assessment system, which may be adapted for delivery of any inhaled therapeutic.

Accuracy and precision of the techniques used to measure methane emissions from ruminant animals are critically important for the success of greenhouse gas mitigation efforts. This manuscript describes the principles and operation of an automated system to monitor methane and carbon dioxide mass fluxes from the breath of ruminant animals.

Utilizing luciferase and in vivo imaging systems (IVIS) as a novel means to identify disease endpoints before clinical developments occur. IVIS has allowed us to visualize in real time the invasion of encephalitic viruses over multiple days, providing a more accurate disease model for future study. It has also allowed us to identify the potential protective features of antivirals and vaccines faster than currently utilized animal models. The capability to utilize individual animals over...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Animal records must be accurately maintained to ensure that data collection is correct. Records range from maintaining information on cage cards to having a detailed database with all of the relevant information on each animal. The primary component of recordkeeping is the individual identification of research animals. There are a variety of methods suitable for identifying mice and rats. This...
