Tilt Table Protocol

The Tilt Table Protocol is a controlled clinical and research procedure that assesses how the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems respond to changes in body position. During testing, a participant rests on a motorized table that gradually moves from lying to an upright tilt while blood pressure, heart rate, symptoms, and sometimes cerebral responses are monitored. The resulting orthostatic responses help characterize autonomic regulation and identify abnormalities associated with syncope, orthostatic intolerance, and related neurological conditions. In neuroscience, the protocol provides a standardized way to investigate brain-body interactions, physiological compensation, and the mechanisms underlying fainting and impaired blood-flow control.

Generation of Tilted Amygdala Slices from a Mouse Brain

2025

The video demonstrates the generation of tilted amygdala slices from a mouse brain. The brain is positioned at an angle on the vibratome specimen stage to obtain slices containing the amygdala and axons from the medial prefrontal cortex that form synaptic connections with the amygdala. The brain slices are maintained at the physiological temperature to preserve the tissue for further experiments.

Tilt Testing with Combined Lower Body Negative Pressure: a "Gold Standard" for Measuring Orthostatic Tolerance

We describe a "gold standard" for evaluating orthostatic tolerance (OT) using tilt testing with combined lower body negative pressure (LBNP). This can be combined with non-invasive evaluations of cardiovascular reflex control. Normal and abnormal responses are defined.

Flow Table Test

2024

The flow table test is an established method used to assess the workability of concrete, particularly useful for evaluating highly flowable concrete mixes. This test employs an apparatus that consists of a wooden board topped with a steel plate, collectively weighing 35 pounds. The board is connected to a base via a hinge and measures 27.6 inches on each side. Concrete is placed within a truncated cone mold that is 8 inches high with an 8-inch base diameter and a 5-inch top diameter. The...

Single Particle Electron Microscopy Reconstruction of the Exosome Complex Using the Random Conical Tilt Method

This article describes a standard method to get a three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of biological macromolecules using negative staining electron microscopy (EM). In this protocol, we explain how to get the 3D structure of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae exosome complex at medium resolution using the random conical tilt reconstruction method (RCT).

Life Tables

2025

A life table is a statistical tool that summarizes the mortality and survival patterns of a population, providing detailed insights into the likelihood of survival or death across different age intervals within a cohort. By organizing data on survival probabilities and mortality rates, life tables offer a clear snapshot of population dynamics over time. They are extensively used in demography, public health, actuarial science, and ecology to analyze life expectancy, design health interventions,...
