Stereotactic Navigation

Stereotactic navigation is an image-guided technique that uses a three-dimensional coordinate system to localize targets and guide instruments within the brain, improving precision in neurosurgical procedures. The system registers preoperative MRI or CT images to the patient’s anatomy, then tracks surgical tools relative to these images to plan and maintain a trajectory toward a defined target while avoiding critical structures. In neuroscience, stereotactic navigation supports brain biopsy, deep brain stimulation, electrode placement, lesioning, and other interventions. By linking anatomical imaging with real-time guidance, it can improve targeting accuracy, reduce tissue disruption, and support research on brain function and neurological disease.

Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) involves image-guided, ablative radiation delivered to cancer targets refractory to chemotherapy or to conventional radiation treatment. The robotic-armed Cyberknife SBRT system, using sophisticated target localization, delivers hypofractionated radiation doses capable of sterilizing cancer targets. This article will consider new therapeutic roles of SBRT for gynecological cancers.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.

Stereotactic injection of lentiviruses expressing cDNAs or shRNAs can modulate gene expression in specific brain areas of mice. Here, we present a protocol to combine stereotactic injections with behavioral tasks, such as the Open Field Test (OFT) and the Forced Swim Test (FST).

A Stereotactically Guided Ablation Technique for Auditory Cortex Removal in Rats

This video demonstrates a stereotactically-guided surgical procedure for ablating the auditory cortex in a rat. The steps include identifying anatomical landmarks in an anesthetized rat secured in a stereotactic frame, creating a window on the skull above the auditory cortex, aspirating the cortical layers, and providing post-operative care to assess the impact of the ablation on sound processing.
