Erp Waveform Analysis

ERP waveform analysis is a method for characterizing event-related potentials, electrical brain responses time-locked to a stimulus or event, and helps quantify changes in neural processing. Researchers record electroencephalographic activity, segment it into stimulus-aligned epochs, reduce background noise through averaging, and measure waveform features such as amplitude, latency, and component timing. In pharmacology, these measures provide objective indicators of how drugs influence attention, perception, cognition, and sensory processing. Comparing ERP waveforms across treatment conditions can reveal drug effects that may not be evident from behavioral performance alone, supporting investigations of drug mechanisms, central nervous system activity, and potential biomarkers of response.

Effective Value of a Periodic Waveform

2024

The concept of effective value, the root mean square (RMS) value, is crucial in understanding electrical circuits and power delivery. This idea emerges from the necessity to measure the effectiveness of a voltage or current source in supplying power to a resistive load. The effective value of a periodic current represents the direct current (DC) that conveys the same average power to a resistor as the periodic current itself. This concept is crucial when assessing AC circuits. To determine the...

2022

This article describes the semi-automated measurement of the amplitudes and latencies of the first five peaks and troughs in the auditory brainstem response waveform. An additional routine compiles and annotates the data into a spreadsheet for experimenter analysis. These free computer routines are executed using the open-source statistical package R.

This protocol describes key steps involved in assessing the sensitivity of the brain of one person to the stimulus processing of a close other by selecting pairs of partners, recording their electroencephalogram (EEG) simultaneously and computing their event-related brain potentials (ERPs).

Event-related Potentials and the Oddball Task

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Given the overwhelming amount of information captured by the sensory organs, it is crucial that the brain is able to prioritize the processing of certain stimuli, to spend less effort on what might not be currently important and to attend to what is. One heuristic the brain uses is to ignore stimuli that are frequent or constant in favor of stimuli that are unexpected or unique. Therefore, rare events...
