Mechanical Advantage

Mechanical advantage is the factor by which a machine increases or redirects an applied force, allowing a task to be performed with less input force. It is calculated as the ratio of output force to input force and arises from how a machine distributes force and distance through components such as levers, pulleys, gears, and inclined planes. A system with a mechanical advantage greater than one produces a larger output force, although the input must generally move through a greater distance. Studying mechanical advantage helps explain force transmission, energy conservation, and the design of tools and machines used in engineering, construction, transportation, and everyday activities.
