Lava Lamp

A lava lamp is a decorative device that visually demonstrates heat transfer, fluid motion, and buoyancy through continuously rising and falling blobs. An incandescent bulb heats wax suspended in a surrounding liquid; as the wax expands, its density decreases and buoyancy carries it upward, where cooling increases its density and causes it to sink again, producing a repeating convection cycle. The lamp’s behavior depends on temperature gradients, density differences, viscosity, and the immiscibility of the wax and liquid. In physics education, lava lamps provide an accessible model for examining thermal energy, convection currents, phase behavior, and the relationship between temperature and fluid density.

Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) Assays for the Species-specific Detection of Eimeria that Infect Chickens

2015

Diagnosis of Eimeria infection in chickens remains demanding. Parasite morphology- and host pathology-led approaches are commonly inconclusive, while molecular approaches based on PCR have proven demanding in cost and expertise. The aim of this protocol is to establish loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) as a straightforward molecular diagnostic for eimerian infection.

This paper reports the protocol for a rapid identification assay for Bemisia tabaci based on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technology. The protocol requires minimal laboratory training and can, therefore, be implemented on-site at points of entry for plant imports such as seaports and airports.
