Julian Rotter

Julian Rotter was an American psychologist whose work shaped modern personality and social psychology by linking behavior to learning, expectations, and perceived control. His social learning theory proposes that behavior depends on a person's expectancy that an action will produce a particular outcome and the value assigned to that outcome, with learning influenced by reinforcement and social context. Rotter's locus of control distinguishes people who generally attribute outcomes to their own actions from those who perceive outcomes as governed mainly by external forces. These concepts support research on personality, motivation, decision-making, and clinical assessment, while informing studies of how beliefs about control shape adaptation and behavior.

Rotter's Locus of Control

2025

Julian Rotter introduced the concept of locus of control, a cognitive factor that significantly influences personality development and learning. Locus of control refers to an individual's beliefs about the extent of control they have over events in their lives. According to Rotter, this belief system can be categorized into two types: internal and external locus of control. Individuals with an internal locus of control believe that their personal efforts and decisions directly affect their...

An Allele-specific Gene Expression Assay to Test the Functional Basis of Genetic Associations

Cited by 2 •

2010

Genetic associations often remain unexplained at a functional level. This method aims to assess the effect of phenotype-associated genetic markers on gene expression by analyzing cells heterozygous for transcribed SNPs. The technology allows accurate measurement by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to quantify allele-specific primer extension products.

Analysis of the Lipid Composition of Mycobacteria by Thin Layer Chromatography

A protocol is presented to extract the total lipid content of the cell wall of a wide range of mycobacteria. Moreover, extraction and analytical protocols of the different types of mycolic acids are shown. A thin-layer chromatographic protocol to monitor these mycobacterial compounds is also provided.

This video shows how to induce abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) in mice via transient intraluminal infusion of porcine pancreatic elastase into the infrarenal segment of the abdominal aorta. The model has the ability to add broad insight into the pathobiology of AAA due to the emergence of numerous transgenic and gene knockout mice.

Single-Molecule Tracking Microscopy - A Tool for Determining the Diffusive States of Cytosolic Molecules

3D single-molecule localization microscopy is utilized to probe the spatial positions and motion trajectories of fluorescently labeled proteins in living bacterial cells. The experimental and data analysis protocol described herein determines the prevalent diffusive behaviors of cytosolic proteins based on pooled single-molecule trajectories.
