Participant Retention

Participant retention is the process of keeping research participants engaged and available throughout a study, helping investigators obtain complete and reliable data. In psychology research, retention depends on sustained communication, clear expectations, manageable procedures, participant rapport, and appropriate reminders or compensation, which can reduce missed visits and withdrawal. Strong retention is especially important in longitudinal studies, clinical research, and behavioral interventions that measure change over time. By limiting attrition, researchers can reduce bias, preserve statistical power, and draw more credible conclusions about psychological development, treatment outcomes, and relationships between behavior and mental health.
