Bonferroni Test

The Bonferroni test is a multiple-comparison procedure used to limit false-positive findings when several statistical hypotheses are tested simultaneously. It controls the family-wise error rate by dividing the chosen significance level, α, by the number of comparisons, m, so each individual test uses a threshold of α/m; equivalently, each p-value can be multiplied by m and compared with α. Researchers apply this correction after analyses such as analysis of variance to evaluate pairwise differences while reducing the chance of incorrectly declaring a result significant. Although conservative, it provides a straightforward safeguard in confirmatory statistics and biomedical research.

The Bonferroni test is a statistical test named after Carlo Emilio Bonferroni, an Italian mathematician best known for Bonferroni inequalities. This statistical test is a type of multiple comparison test to determine which means are different than the rest. Bonferroni test can minimize the Type 1 error by reducing the significance level alpha, which otherwise increases with sample pairs. The means of different samples are first paired in all possible combinations. The null hypothesis of the...

Here, we present a protocol to use a curvelet transform-based, open-source MATLAB software tool for quantifying fibrillar collagen organization in the extracellular matrix of both normal and diseased tissues. This tool can be applied to images with collagen fibers or other types of line-like structures.

This step-by-step protocol analyzes Drosophila negative geotaxis behavior using an automated multi-cylinder system that hosts hundreds of flies and synchronizes their action by an electric motor. Upon synchronization, fly negative geotaxis behavior is assayed, digitally recorded, and analyzed using the self-designed RflyDetection software.
