Experimental Controls

Experimental controls are planned reference conditions that help researchers determine whether an observed outcome is caused by the factor under investigation rather than by bias, variation, or procedural artifacts. In a controlled study, a control group or condition is kept comparable to the experimental group except for the tested variable; negative controls establish expected baseline behavior, while positive controls confirm that the system can produce a known response. Statistical comparison of control and treatment measurements supports estimation of effect size, variability, and uncertainty. Well-designed controls strengthen causal interpretation, improve reproducibility, and guide reliable conclusions across laboratory, clinical, and field research.

Experimental Investigation of the Hierarchical Control in DC Microgrids Using a Real-time Simulator

2025

This article presents a DC microgrid with hierarchical control implemented in a simulator, OPAL RT-Lab. It details the circuit modeling, primary and secondary control strategies, and experimental validation. The results demonstrate effective control performance, highlighting the importance of a robust experimental platform for microgrid research and development.

Neural-machine interfaces (NMI) have been developed to identify the user's locomotion mode. These NMIs are potentially useful for neural control of powered artificial legs, but have not been fully demonstrated. This paper presented (1) our designed engineering platform for easy implementation and development of neural control for powered lower limb prostheses and (2) an experimental setup and protocol in a laboratory environment to evaluate neurally-controlled artificial legs on patients with...

Experimental Approach to Examine Leptin Signaling in the Carotid Bodies and its Effects on Control of Breathing

Our study focuses on the effects of leptin signaling in carotid body (CB) on the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR). We performed 'loss of function' experiments measuring the effect of leptin on HVR after CB denervation and 'gain of function' experiments measuring HVR after overexpression of the leptin receptor in CB.

Experimentation using a Confederate

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University When orchestrating an experiment, it is important that the experience elicits the most natural reactions from the participants as possible. Researchers accomplish much of this through their creation of the experimental settings. Many research projects focus on interactions between two or more people. In these situations the environment or setting must often be less natural; often only one person...
