Q1: Do young children believe everything they hear?
Contrary to popular belief, young children are not entirely gullible. Recent research shows that children as young as age 3 evaluate what others say and demonstrate selective trust in testimony. They pay attention to an individual's prior behavior and use that information to judge whether someone is a trustworthy informational source.
Q2: How do children evaluate the trustworthiness of information sources?
Children assess trustworthiness by observing an individual's prior accuracy and behavior. They track whether someone has provided correct or incorrect information in the past, then use these observations to decide whose testimony to trust when receiving conflicting information. This selective trust emerges early and guides their learning choices.
Q3: What is the purpose of the history phase in this trust experiment?
The history phase establishes each puppet's track record of accuracy. One puppet labels four common objects correctly while the other labels them all inaccurately.
