Antibody Structure

Anticorpos, também conhecidos como imunoglobulinas, são peças-chave na resposta imune humoral contra antígenos estranhos.  Anticorpos, também conhecidos como imunoglobulinas (Ig), têm um papel essencial no sistema imunitário adaptativo. Essas proteínas de ligação a antigénios são produzidas por células B e compõem 20% do plasma total do sangue em peso. Em mamíferos, os anticorpos constituem cinco classes diferentes, cada uma provocando uma resposta biológica diferente após ligação ao antigénio.
 
 <h4>A Estrutura em Forma de Y dos Anticorpos Contém Quatro Cadeias de Polipeptídeos</h4>
 
 Os anticorpos consistem em quatro cadeias de polipeptídeos: duas cadeias pesadas idênticas de aproximadamente 440 aminoácidos cada, e duas cadeias leves idênticas compostas por cerca de 220 aminoácidos cada. Essas cadeias estão dispostas em uma estrutura em forma de Y que é mantida unida por uma combinação de ligações de dissulfito covalentes e ligações não covalentes.  O IgE é desafiante para estudar devido aos seus baixos níveis em fluidos corporais e são mais conhecidos pelo seu impacto negativo no bem-estar humano: alergias. Antibodies are built from heavy and light chains that work together to form a Y-shaped molecule. These chains give the antibody its basic structure and help it bind to specific targets.

The two upper arms of the Y contain the variable regions, which differ from one antibody to another. These variable regions help determine which antigen, or foreign molecule, the antibody can recognize.

The lower part of the antibody is the constant region. This region is more similar across antibodies and helps define the antibody class. The structure of the chains also supports the antibody’s overall shape and function.

EXPLANATION: Discussions of DNA in earlier grades have been limited to discussions of genes and the role of genes in the appearance and activities of an organism. Biology 1 represents a student's introduction to a molecular model of a DNA as well as the organization of DNA into genes and genes subsequently into chromosomes. Students should address interactions between genes in proteins which regulate both the shape and reproduction of DNA molecules. It is important to note that not all segments of DNA are transcribed for proteins.
