Temperature and Thermal Equilibrium

A temperatura é a medida do calor ou frieza de um corpo e pode ser registrada com um termômetro.
O corpo mais quente tem uma temperatura mais alta, enquanto o mais frio tem uma temperatura mais baixa.
Por exemplo, a água fervente é quente, pois tem uma temperatura mais alta do que a água fria.
Se a água quente e fria forem misturadas, o calor será transferido da água quente para a fria até que sua temperatura se torne igual.
Depois de atingir uma temperatura uniforme, a transferência de calor será interrompida e a água estará em equilíbrio térmico.
Se a água aquecida for colocada dentro de uma geladeira, ela esfriará até atingir a temperatura da geladeira.
Assim, o equilíbrio térmico é a condição em que não há mais transferência de calor entre dois sistemas conectados.
Se um corpo for separado do outro sistema por algum isolante, isso atrasará o processo de equilíbrio térmico.
Portanto, um frasco térmico pode manter o café quente por muito tempo, pois o vácuo presente entre as paredes do frasco atua como um isolante e restringe a transferência de calor.

Calor e temperatura são conceitos essenciais no dia a dia. O estudo do calor e da temperatura faz parte de uma área da física conhecida como termodinâmica. Nem sempre é fácil distinguir entre calor e temperatura. 

O conceito de temperatura evoluiu a partir dos conceitos comuns de quente e frio. A definição científica de temperatura explica mais do que apenas nossa sensação de quente e frio. A temperatura é definida operacionalmente como a quantidade medida com um termômetro. Além disso, a temperatura é proporcional à energia cinética média de translação, o que fornece uma definição mais física. As diferenças de temperatura mantêm a transferência de calor por todo o universo. A transferência de calor é o movimento de energia de um lugar ou material para outro, como resultado de uma diferença de temperatura. A transferência de calor pode alterar a temperatura e afetará desde o comportamento de átomos e moléculas, até o cozimento, o clima na Terra e até mesmo os ciclos de vida das estrelas. É possível sentir o calor entrando no corpo quando se fica debaixo de um sol de verão, ou o calor de um café ou chá quente consumidos após uma caminhada de inverno. Também é possível sentir o calor deixando o corpo com o frio da noite, ou o efeito refrescante do suor após o exercício.

Heat and temperature are key ideas in thermodynamics and in everyday life. People often connect temperature with hot and cold, but science gives it a more precise meaning. Temperature is the quantity measured with a thermometer. It is also linked to the average translational kinetic energy of particles.

Heat is different from temperature. Heat is energy that moves from one place or material to another because there is a difference in temperature. That difference in temperature keeps heat flowing throughout the universe. When heat is transferred, it can change temperature and affect matter in many settings.

These ideas help explain the behavior of atoms and molecules. They also appear in cooking, in Earth’s weather, and in the life cycles of stars. People can feel heat entering the body from the summer Sun or from hot coffee or tea after a winter stroll. People can also feel heat leaving the body from the chill of the night or from the cooling effect of sweat after exercise.
