Growing Embryonic Tissues Outside the Body

Explant culture lets living embryonic tissue continue developing outside the body. Researchers remove cells or tissues from an embryo and grow them ex vivo, which means outside the organism. This setup makes it possible to watch and control developing tissues in ways that are not possible in vivo, or inside the organism.
