Chest Tube Insertion

Chest tube insertion is a clinical procedure that places a flexible tube into the pleural space to remove air, blood, or other fluid and restore normal lung expansion. After creating a controlled passage between the ribs, clinicians position the tube in the pleural cavity and connect it to a drainage system, often using an underwater seal or suction to regulate pressure and prevent air from returning. The technique is used to treat pneumothorax, hemothorax, pleural effusion, and postoperative thoracic drainage. Proper placement, securement, and monitoring help resolve respiratory compromise while reducing complications such as infection, bleeding, or injury to nearby structures.

Source: Rachel Liu, BAO, MBBCh, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Tube thoracostomy (chest tube placement) is a procedure during which a hollow tube is inserted into the thoracic cavity for drainage of fluid or air. Emergency chest tube insertion is performed for definitive treatment of tension pneumothorax, traumatic hemothorax, large-volume pleural effusions, and empyemas. Irrespective of the cause of air and fluid accumulation in the pleural space, the...

Surgical trauma induces an inflammatory response. Cytokines and endogenous ligands are known to modulate myocardial infarct size following ischemia and reperfusion. We present a modified closed-chest model of murine ischemia and reperfusion using hanging weights to minimize effects of thoracotomy.

Overview of Flail Chest Flail chest is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition characterized by the fracture of three or more adjacent ribs in multiple places. It is most commonly caused by direct impacts and trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents or injuries from a steering wheel impact. It can also occur due to falls in elderly individuals with osteoporosis, or assaults involving sharp objects. Pathophysiology The pathophysiology of flail chest is complex, involving fractures of...
