Video-assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a thoracoscope and small chest incisions to diagnose and treat conditions within the thorax, offering an alternative to open thoracotomy. Through ports between the ribs, a camera projects magnified images onto a monitor while specialized instruments enable tissue sampling, lung resection, pleural procedures, or other operations without widely spreading the ribs. By reducing surgical disruption, VATS can support less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery in appropriately selected patients, while also providing clinically valuable visualization and access for thoracic disease management.
