Gas Concentration Control

Gas concentration control is the deliberate regulation of gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide within a defined environment, helping maintain conditions that support reproducible biological responses. In a feedback-controlled system, sensors measure gas levels and trigger valves, gas mixing, or ventilation to restore programmed setpoints when concentrations change. In developmental biology, this approach helps model the oxygen and carbon dioxide conditions experienced by embryos, cultured cells, and organoids, including reduced-oxygen environments that influence cell differentiation and tissue formation. Controlled gas exposure improves experimental consistency and enables researchers to examine how microenvironmental conditions shape development, disease processes, and regenerative outcomes.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...

A Novel Inhalation Mask System to Deliver High Concentrations of Nitric Oxide Gas in Spontaneously Breathing Subjects

2021

This simple and highly adaptable system device for the inhalation of high-concentration nitric oxide (NO) gas does not require mechanical ventilators, positive pressure, or high gas flows. Standard medical consumables and a snug-fitting mask are used to safely deliver NO gas to spontaneously breathing subjects.

This paper describes nitric oxide (NO) fumigation protocols for postharvest pest control. Fumigation chambers are flushed with nitrogen (N2) to establish ultralow oxygen conditions before NO is injected. At the end, chambers are flushed with N2 to dilute NO before exposing products to ambient air to prevent exposure to NO2.
