Double Distilled Water

Double distilled water is water purified through two successive distillation steps to reduce dissolved salts, organic compounds, and other nonvolatile contaminants. During each cycle, water is vaporized and then condensed, while many impurities remain in the boiling flask; repeating the process further improves chemical purity. In immunology and infection research, this water supports preparation of buffers, culture reagents, stains, and analytical solutions where contaminating ions or residues could affect reactions, cell-based assays, or microbial measurements. Its use helps improve experimental consistency, although additional sterilization or specialized treatment may be required when biological sterility is essential.

Distillation of a Miscible Mixture Some liquids will evaporate entirely over time if left in an open container at room temperature. However, this evaporation process can be significantly accelerated if the liquid is heated. As the liquid is heated, the molecules within it gain the energy to escape the liquid phase and transition into the gas phase in the form of bubbles. This phenomenon is called boiling. Vapor Pressure Consider a closed container of liquid. Initially, some of this liquid...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...
