Mouse Olfactory Epithelium

The mouse olfactory epithelium is a specialized sensory tissue lining the nasal cavity that detects airborne chemicals and converts them into neural signals, making it a key model for studying sensory neuroscience. Odorant molecules bind receptors on the cilia of olfactory sensory neurons, activating intracellular signaling that generates electrical responses and transmits information through axons to the olfactory bulb. Supporting cells and basal stem cells help maintain the epithelium, enabling investigation of tissue repair and neuronal replacement. Research using this tissue clarifies odor coding, neural circuit organization, sensory plasticity, and mechanisms of olfactory dysfunction.
