Rat Tibial Nerve

The rat tibial nerve is a peripheral nerve that carries motor and sensory signals between the spinal cord and the hindlimb, making it a useful model for studying nerve function and repair. Its axons transmit action potentials through myelinated and unmyelinated fibers, while Schwann cells and surrounding connective tissues support signal conduction and regeneration after injury. In bioengineering, researchers use the rat tibial nerve to evaluate nerve guidance conduits, biomaterials, electrical stimulation, and tissue-engineered grafts. These studies help measure functional recovery and refine strategies for treating peripheral nerve damage in humans.

Source: Brakkee, E. M., et al. Surgery and Behavioral Testing in the Tibial Neuroma Transposition Model in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).This video demonstrates a procedure to generate a rat tibial neuroma transposition (TNT) model. After exposing the tibial nerve in the hind leg of an anesthetized rat, transect the nerve. Next, create a subcutaneous tunnel, thread the severed nerve through the tunnel, and suture it in place. In the absence of a target for reinnervation, disorganized axonal...

Traumatic injury to the spinal cord disrupts communication with the brain. To restore lost connectivity we utilize a peripheral nerve graft to provide a substratum for regenerating fibers in combination with neurotrophic factors and matrix-modulating enzymes to remove inhibitory molecules to promote long distance growth.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation via Chronically Implanted Peripheral Nerve Cuff Electrodes in Rats

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.
