Tracer Particles

Tracer particles are small, trackable markers used to reveal fluid motion, transport, and mechanical behavior in biological and engineered systems. In bioengineering, researchers introduce particles with defined size, density, and optical or magnetic properties into a system, then monitor their trajectories using microscopy, particle image velocimetry, or related imaging methods; particle displacement over time can indicate velocity fields, mixing, diffusion, or forces. These measurements support characterization of microfluidic flows, porous biomaterials, cell-generated forces, and tissue mechanics. Tracer particles also help evaluate mass transport and delivery strategies, linking observable motion to design decisions in diagnostics, drug delivery, and regenerative medicine.

Subatomic Particles

Dalton was only partially correct about the particles that make up matter. All matter is composed of atoms, and atoms are composed of three smaller subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. These three particles account for the mass and the charge of an atom. The Discovery of the Electron The first clue about the subatomic structure came at the end of the 19th century when J.J. Thomson discovered the electron using a cathode ray tube. This apparatus consisted of a sealed glass...
