Ventral Dorsal Stimulation

Ventral dorsal stimulation is a bioengineering approach that applies targeted electrical input to the ventral and dorsal regions of the spinal cord or related neural tissue to influence motor and sensory circuits. Stimulation of dorsal pathways can modulate incoming sensory signals, while ventral stimulation engages networks associated with motor output; electrode placement, pulse timing, amplitude, and frequency determine the resulting neural response. This approach supports the design of neuroprosthetic interfaces and rehabilitation systems for studying neural circuitry, restoring movement, and improving control of impaired sensorimotor function. It also provides a platform for testing how engineered electrical signals interact with biological tissue.

We describe procedures for preparation and electrophysiological recording from brain slices that maintain the dorsal-ventral axis of the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC). Because neural encoding of location follows a dorsal-ventral organization within the MEC, these procedures facilitate investigation of cellular mechanisms important for navigation and memory.

(2015)This video demonstrates virus-mediated gene transfer into the mouse dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) to enable light-induced auditory stimulation. A viral vector encoding opsin, a light-sensitive ion channel, is injected into the DCN following a craniotomy and cerebellar aspiration for direct access. The expressed opsins allow neurons to be...
