Arsenazo Iii Reagent

Arsenazo III reagent is a metallochromic, calcium-binding dye used to measure calcium ions in biological and chemical samples, making it valuable for quantitative assays. In a colorimetric method, arsenazo III forms a colored complex with Ca2+ under controlled pH conditions; the resulting change in absorbance is measured spectrophotometrically and compared with standards to determine calcium concentration. This approach supports analysis of serum, cell extracts, and other samples in clinical biochemistry and laboratory research, including studies of calcium homeostasis, signaling, and enzyme activity, provided that matrix effects and competing ions are controlled.

Preparing Anhydrous Reagents and Equipment

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstrated by: Timothy Beck and Lucas Arney Many reactions in organic chemistry are moisture-sensitive and must be carried out under careful exclusion of water. In these cases the reagents have a high affinity to react with water from the atmosphere and if left exposed the desired reaction will not take place or give poor yields, because the reactants are chemically altered. In order to prevent undesired reactions with H2O...

Synthesis Of A Ti(III) Metallocene Using Schlenk Line Technique

2023

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Inorganic chemists often work with highly air- and water-sensitive compounds. The two most common and practical methods for air-free synthesis utilize either Schlenk lines or gloveboxes. This experiment will demonstrate how to perform simple manipulations on a Schlenk line with a focus on solvent preparation and transfer. Through the synthesis of a reactive Ti(III) metallocene complex, we will demonstrate a new, simple...

EDTA: Auxiliary Complexing Reagents

2024

EDTA titrations are usually carried out in highly basic conditions, where the fully deprotonated form of EDTA, Y4−, actively complexes with the free metal ions in the solution. Several metal ions precipitate as hydrous oxide (hydroxides, oxides, or oxyhydroxides) under these conditions, lowering the concentration of free metal ions in the solution. For this reason, auxiliary complexing agents or ligands such as ammonia, tartrate, citrate, or triethanolamine are used in EDTA titrations to...

Acid Halides to Ketones: Gilman Reagent

2025

Lithium dialkyl cuprate, also known as Gilman reagents, selectively reduces acid halides to ketones. The acid chloride is treated with Gilman reagent at −78 °C in the presence of ether solution to produce a ketone in good yield. As shown below, the mechanism proceeds in two steps. First, one of the alkyl groups of the reagent acts as a nucleophile and attacks the acyl carbon of the acid chloride to form a tetrahedral intermediate. This is followed by the reformation of the carbon–oxygen double...
