Osmotic Stabilizer

An osmotic stabilizer is a substance or solution that helps maintain balanced water movement across biological membranes, protecting cells and tissues from osmotic stress. It works by regulating the concentration of dissolved solutes inside and outside cells, limiting the net movement of water that can cause cellular swelling, shrinkage, or membrane damage. In biology, osmotic stabilizers support cell culture, tissue preservation, biochemical assays, and the handling of isolated organelles or proteins. By maintaining suitable osmotic conditions, they improve sample integrity, experimental reproducibility, and the reliability of studies involving living or fragile biological materials.

Osmosis and Osmotic Pressure of Solutions

2020

A number of natural and synthetic materials exhibit selective permeation, meaning that only molecules or ions of a certain size, shape, polarity, charge, and so forth, are capable of passing through (permeating) the material. Biological cell membranes provide elegant examples of selective permeation in nature, while dialysis tubing used to remove metabolic wastes from blood is a more simplistic technological example. Regardless of how they may be fabricated, these materials are generally...

Osmotic Pressure

Osmosis is a process where solvent molecules move toward a solution through a semipermeable membrane. As the solution dilutes due to the entry of solvent, it expands. This expansion increases the hydrostatic pressure of the solution. When the hydrostatic pressure equals the osmotic pressure, osmosis stops.Osmotic pressure, denoted by Π, is the minimum pressure needed to prevent the solvent from passing into the solution by osmosis. The van 't Hoff equation calculates the osmotic pressure of an...

Examine Chemoavoidance Behavior in Transgenic Worms Using Osmotic Avoidance Assay

2025

This video describes an osmotic avoidance assay to examine chemoavoidance behavior in a transgenic worm model. Avoidance behavior is tested in a plate in the presence of a high-osmotic barrier and chemoattractant. The worms with a functional loss of neurons get attracted by the chemoattractant, cross the high-osmotic barrier, and become paralyzed in the trap zone because of the anesthetic solution.

(2021)This video demonstrates the method for delivering neurotherapeutic drugs using an osmotic pump in a demyelinated mouse model. The controlled drug release promotes remyelination by activating myelin-producing cells in the corpus callosum.

Nuclear Stability

Protons and neutrons, collectively called nucleons, are packed together tightly in a nucleus. With a radius of about 10−15 meters, a nucleus is quite small compared to the radius of the entire atom, which is about 10−10 meters. Nuclei are extremely dense compared to bulk matter, averaging 1.8 × 1014 grams per cubic centimeter. If the earth’s density were equal to the average nuclear density, the earth’s radius would be only about 200 meters. To hold positively charged protons together in the...
