Somatic Gene Transfer

Somatic gene transfer is the delivery of genetic material into non-germline cells to alter their function without changing heritable DNA, an approach with important applications in cancer research. The process typically uses viral or nonviral vectors to introduce therapeutic genes into target cells, where the delivered DNA or RNA can support protein production, restore tumor-suppressor activity, or modify immune responses. In oncology, researchers investigate somatic gene transfer for selectively targeting tumor cells, enhancing immune-cell activity, and improving sensitivity to treatment. Studies of vector design, delivery efficiency, gene expression, and safety help determine whether these strategies can produce durable, localized anticancer effects.

Horizontal Gene Transfer

2025

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a process where genetic material moves between organisms within the same generation, unlike vertical gene transfer, which occurs from parent to offspring. HGT plays a crucial role in microbial evolution, adaptation, and survival, particularly in shared environments like the human gut.Mobile genetic elements such as plasmids, prophages, integrons, insertion sequences, and transposons facilitate this process. HGT occurs through three primary mechanisms:...

(2018)This video demonstrates the production of recombinant retroviral particles by transfecting human kidney-derived packaging cells, enabling stable gene delivery to target cells for downstream applications such as genetic modification, functional assays, or lineage differentiation studies.

Tissue Regeneration with Somatic Stem Cells

2023

Somatic or adult stem cells, like embryonic stem cells, are capable of self-renewal but demonstrate a restricted differentiation potential. Nonetheless, these cells are crucial to homeostatic processes and play an important role in tissue repair. By studying and manipulating this cell population, scientist may be able to develop new regenerative therapies for injuries and diseases. This video first defines somatic stem cells, and then explores the role these cells play in tissue regeneration.

Gene Transfer into Older Chicken Embryos by ex ovo Electroporation

A method of gene transfer into chicken embryos at later incubation stages (older than Hamburger and Hamilton stage (HH) 22) is described. This method overcomes disadvantages of in ovo electroporation applied to older chicken embryos and is a useful technique to study gene function and regulation at older developmental stages.
