Surgical Stress Effects

Surgical stress effects are the physiological, endocrine, immune, and inflammatory changes triggered by tissue injury during an operation, with important implications for cancer research. Tissue damage and pain activate the sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, releasing catecholamines and glucocorticoids while inflammatory mediators and immune-cell activity shift during recovery. These responses can influence tumor-cell survival, angiogenesis, metastatic potential, and residual disease, making surgical stress a key context for studying perioperative cancer biology. Research in this area informs strategies such as optimized anesthesia, analgesia, and perioperative therapies designed to support recovery while limiting conditions that may favor cancer progression.

The Effects of Shear Stress on Platelets Treated with Antibodies Against Mechanosensory Receptors

2025

This video demonstrates the method to assess the impact of shear stress on platelets. Antibody treatment induces dissociation and conformational changes in mechanoreceptor complexes, activating the platelets and expressing markers on the surface. These markers are observed via immunostaining and flow cytometry.

We study the effect of surgical masks on cardiopulmonary function based on a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). This study shows that surgical masks reduce cardiopulmonary exercise capacity and ventilation in healthy young subjects and wearing masks might affect aerobic exercise capacity more in female subjects than in male subjects.
