Diamond Crystal

A diamond crystal is a solid form of carbon in which atoms occupy a highly ordered three-dimensional crystal lattice, giving diamond its distinctive chemical and physical properties. Each carbon atom forms four strong covalent bonds in a tetrahedral arrangement, producing a rigid network with exceptional hardness, high thermal conductivity, and electrical insulating behavior. In chemistry, studying diamond crystals connects atomic bonding, crystal structure, defects, and phase stability under high pressure and temperature. These principles support applications in cutting and polishing tools, heat-management materials, optical components, and specialized electronic devices, while engineered defects enable sensing and quantum technologies.

Physical Properties Of Minerals I: Crystals and Cleavage

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals comprise various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. Each of these properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This experiment examines two properties that stem primarily from symmetric repetition of...

Protein Crystallization

2023

Protein crystallization, obtaining a solid lattice of biomolecules, elucidates protein structure and enables the study of protein function. Crystallization involves drying purified protein under a combination of many factors, including pH, temperature, ionic strength, and protein concentration. Once crystals are obtained, the protein structure can be elucidated by x-ray diffraction and computation of an electron density model. This video introduces protein crystallization and shows a general...

This study presents a methodology to prepare 3D, biodegradable, foam-like cell scaffolds based on biocompatible side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Confocal microscopy experiments show that foam-like LCEs allow for cell attachment, proliferation, and the spontaneous alignment of C2C12s myoblasts.

This work focuses on the standard protocol for preparing the externally-heated diamond anvil cell (EHDAC) for generating high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) conditions. The EHDAC is employed to investigate materials in Earth and planetary interiors under extreme conditions, which can be also used in solid state physics and chemistry studies.
