Eddy Diffusion

Eddy diffusion is the transport and mixing of matter caused by irregular, swirling fluid motion rather than molecular motion alone. In packed chromatographic columns, differences in particle arrangement create multiple flow paths, so solute molecules travel different distances and reach the detector at different times, producing band broadening; this contribution is often called the A term in the van Deemter equation. Understanding eddy diffusion helps chemists optimize particle size, packing quality, and flow conditions to improve column efficiency and resolution. The concept also informs mass transfer and dispersion analyses in other flowing chemical systems.

Since eddy currents occur only in conductors, magnets can separate metals from other materials. For example, in a recycling center, trash is dumped in batches down a ramp, beneath which lies a powerful magnet. Conductors in the trash are slowed by eddy currents, while nonmetals in the trash move on, separating from the metals. This works for all metals, not just ferromagnetic ones. Other major applications of eddy currents appear in metal detectors and the braking systems of trains and roller...

Cell Membranes and Diffusion In order to function, cells are required to move materials in and out of their cytoplasm via their cell membranes. These membranes are semipermeable, meaning that certain molecules are allowed to pass through, but not others. This movement of molecules is mediated by the phospholipid bilayer and its embedded proteins, some of which act as transport channels for molecules that otherwise would not be able to pass through the membrane, such as ions and carbohydrates.

Diffusion in Agar ExpandNOTE: In this exercise, you will be given agar containing an indicator chemical called phenolphthalein. When phenolphthalein is exposed to the normal alkaline conditions in the agar, it will look pink. But when it is exposed to neutral or acidic conditions, it changes from pink to clear. You will make different size and shaped agar cubes as a model for cells to study the impact of cell size and shape on diffusion rate. To make the first set of cells, measure out and cut...

This manuscript describes deterministic and probabilistic algorithms for white matter (WM) reconstruction, used to examine differences in optic radiation (OR) connectivity between albinism and controls. Although probabilistic tractography follows the true course of nerve fibers more closely, deterministic tractography was run to compare the reliability and reproducibility of both techniques.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Traditional brain imaging techniques using MRI are very good at visualizing the gross structures of the brain. A structural brain image made with MRI provides high contrast of the borders between gray and white matter, and information about the size and shape of brain structures. However, these images do not detail the underlying structure and integrity of white matter networks in the brain, which...
