Temperature Recording

Temperature recording is the measurement and documentation of thermal conditions over time, a fundamental practice for controlling and interpreting chemical processes. Thermometers and electronic temperature sensors detect changes in a temperature-dependent property, such as liquid expansion or electrical resistance, and convert that change into a readable value after calibration. In chemistry, accurate records help monitor reaction rates, identify phase transitions, maintain experimental conditions, and assess heat transfer during synthesis, distillation, and calorimetry. Continuous or time-stamped measurements also reveal temperature fluctuations, support reproducibility, and improve laboratory safety when reactions or materials require strict thermal control.

Here we describe a protocol for measuring and analyzing temperature responses in the olfactory bulb of Xenopus laevis. Olfactory receptor neurons and mitral cells are differentially stained, after which calcium changes are recorded, reflecting a sensitivity of some neural networks in the bulb to temperature drops induced at the nose.

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Temperature Dependent Decomposition of Hydrogen PeroxideExpand We suggest that students work in pairs for this experiment. Equipment controls may vary. In this lab, you'll perform a decomposition reaction where a single compound breaks down into two or more simpler products. You will observe the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. This decomposition happens very slowly, so you will use iron (III) nitrate as a...

Temperature Gradient Assay: A Method to Test Temperature Preference in Drosophila Larvae

2023

Drosophila fruit flies can distinguish small changes in temperature and therefore select environments with favorable thermal conditions. This video describes a behavioral assay that tests the temperature preference of Drosophila larvae on a linear thermal gradient.
