Tetrahedral Holes

Tetrahedral holes are interstitial spaces in a crystal lattice surrounded by four atoms or ions arranged at the corners of a tetrahedron. In close-packed structures such as face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed arrays, these sites arise between layers of spheres, with two tetrahedral holes available per host atom; a small ion can occupy one when its size and charge are compatible with the lattice. Understanding tetrahedral holes helps explain the structures, stoichiometry, and coordination environments of ionic solids, alloys, and other crystalline materials. Their occupancy also influences material properties such as density, stability, ion transport, and phase behavior.

Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes

2020

Tetrahedral Complexes Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...

Detection of Black Holes

2023

Although black holes were theoretically postulated in the 1920s, they remained outside the domain of observational astronomy until the 1970s. Their closest cousins are neutron stars, which are composed almost entirely of neutrons packed against each other, making them extremely dense. A neutron star has the same mass as the Sun but its diameter is only a few kilometers. Therefore, the escape velocity from their surface is close to the speed of light. Not until the 1960s, when the first neutron...

The goal of the protocol is to enable visualization of the detailed flow fields and determination of the near-boundary shear and normal stresses within an equilibrium scour hole induced by a vibrating pipeline.

Fabrication of a Master Mold for Microneedles with a Micron-sized Air-vent Hole

2025

This article introduces a unique method for fabricating master molds with an air-vent hole to prevent air entrapment during viscous polymer casting, enabling the fabrication of gelatin microneedles with sharp tips. By reducing the casting volume of high-viscosity gelatin, thin-walled hollow pyramidal microneedles could also be fabricated.

This protocol describes the modified hole board, which is a behavioral test set-up that comprises the characteristics of an open field and a traditional hole board. This set-up enables the differential analysis of unconditioned behavior of small laboratory mammals as well as the analysis of cognitive abilities.
