Polar Substances

Polar substances are materials whose molecules or ions have an uneven distribution of electrical charge, creating partial positive and negative regions. This polarity arises when differences in electronegativity produce polar bonds and molecular geometry prevents the bond dipoles from canceling; the resulting dipole moments influence interactions such as hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole attraction, and ion-dipole forces. In chemistry, polarity helps explain why substances such as water dissolve many ionic and polar compounds but generally do not mix with nonpolar substances. Understanding polar substances is essential for predicting solubility, boiling points, molecular interactions, solvent behavior, and outcomes in chemical separation and biological systems.

Group Polarization

2020

Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition. The phenomenon of group polarization explains many actions taken by groups that would not...

Dipole Moment of a Molecule Polar covalent bonds connect two atoms with differing electronegativities, leaving one atom with a partial positive charge (δ+) and the other atom with a partial negative charge (δ–), as the electrons are pulled toward the more electronegative atom. This separation of charge gives rise to a bond dipole moment. The magnitude of a bond dipole moment is represented by the Greek letter mu (µ) and is given by the formula shown here, where Q is the magnitude of the...

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

2024

Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue. Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

Deleterious Substances in Aggregate

2024

Deleterious substances in aggregates can be detrimental to the quality and durability of concrete. These substances include organic impurities like loam, which interfere with cement hydration and are usually present in the sand. These prevent a good bond between aggregate and cement paste. Organic impurities can be detected using the colorimetric test, where the darkness of a solution after agitation indicates the level of organic content. Another type of impurity is clay and fine material that...

Automation of Mode Locking in a Nonlinear Polarization Rotation Fiber Laser through Output Polarization Measurements

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.
