Salicylate

Salicylates are a group of compounds derived from salicylic acid, including aspirin, that have important analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and antiplatelet effects in clinical medicine. They act mainly by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes, reducing prostaglandin production; aspirin irreversibly inhibits platelet cyclooxygenase, lowering thromboxane formation and platelet aggregation. At excessive exposure, salicylates also disrupt cellular energy metabolism and stimulate respiration, producing characteristic acid-base abnormalities that can progress to confusion, hyperthermia, or coma. Understanding salicylate pharmacology supports appropriate use for pain, inflammation, and cardiovascular risk reduction, while serum concentration, blood gas, and clinical assessment help identify and manage toxicity.
