Heaves And Lifts

Heaves and lifts are abnormal, sustained or forceful movements felt or seen on the chest during cardiac examination, providing clues to altered heart structure or workload. Clinicians assess these impulses by placing the hand over the precordium; a parasternal heave or lift may reflect increased right ventricular activity, while a displaced or forceful apical impulse can indicate left ventricular enlargement or pressure overload. These bedside findings help guide cardiovascular assessment and determine whether further evaluation, such as echocardiography or electrocardiography, is warranted. Although they are not diagnostic alone, heaves and lifts can support the clinical recognition of hypertrophy, dilation, and significant cardiac disease.

Lift

Lift is a fundamental aerodynamic force that acts perpendicular to the direction of airflow. It plays a central role in achieving and sustaining flight and in stabilizing various vehicles. Lift primarily originates from pressure differences created across surfaces, such as an airfoil. A lower pressure region forms above the wing, while a higher pressure region forms below it, generating an upward force. This differential results from the shape and orientation of the airfoil, enabling the wing...

Clark Y-14 Wing Performance: Deployment of High-lift Devices (Flaps and Slats)

Source: David Guo, College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA), Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Manchester, New Hampshire A wing is the major lift-generating apparatus in an airplane. Wing performance can be further enhanced by deploying high-lift devices, such as flaps (at the trailing edge) and slats (at the leading edge) during takeoff or landing. In this experiment, a wind tunnel is utilized to generate certain airspeeds, and a Clark Y-14 wing with a flap and slat...

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center The cardiac assessment is one of the core examinations performed by almost every physician whenever encountering a patient. Disorders of the cardiac system are among the most common reasons for hospital admission, with conditions ranging from myocardial infarction to congestive heart failure. Learning a complete and thorough cardiac examination is therefore crucial for any practicing physician.
