Cumulative Measurement

Cumulative measurement is the process of combining successive measurements to determine a total quantity, change, or exposure over a defined period, making it useful when individual readings do not capture overall system behavior. In engineering, instruments or data systems record values at specified intervals, then sum them or integrate a rate with respect to time while accounting for units, sampling frequency, and any baseline or reset condition. Engineers use cumulative measurement to track energy consumption, material flow, wear, displacement, or accumulated load, supporting performance assessment, maintenance planning, process control, and safety decisions. Reliable accumulation depends on calibrated sensors, consistent timestamps, and appropriate treatment of missing or noisy data.

Cumulative Frequency Distribution

2023

A cumulative frequency distribution is another type of frequency distribution. Instead of reporting how many data values fall in some classes, it reports how many data values are contained in either that class or any class to its left. Technically, it means the sum of frequencies of the class and all the classes below it in a frequency distribution. A cumulative frequency is calculated by adding the frequency of each class lower than the corresponding class interval or category. In general, a...

Measuring Biodiversity - Concepts

Diverse ecosystems are important for the health of the planet and our survival as humans; it is therefore incredibly important for us to understand and measure biodiversity, which is defined as the variability among living organisms in an ecosystem. Biodiversity can be measured at many different levels including genetic, species, community, and ecosystem. One way to measure biodiversity is to assess species richness of an ecosystem, which is the total number of distinct species within a local...

Quadrats and Transects ExpandIn this activity, you will be using quadrats along transect lines to take biodiversity measurements of the plant species in three distinct habitats near your classroom. Begin by splitting into groups. Four works best. Select one person in your group to be the data recorder. The other three will be the data collectors. Next, take one quadrat, or hula hoop, per group and place it on one side of one transect, or rope, next to a knot to allow identification of the plant...

Transgenic mice have been extremely useful in ascribing physiological function to genes. As such, research in general, and functional studies of airway, in particular, have undergone a remarkable shift toward murine models. Here we provide protocols for in vitro trachea constriction studies to evaluate smooth muscle function in murine airway.

Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of the visual cortex that is often accompanied by strong suppression of one eye. We present a new technique for measuring and treating interocular suppression in patients with amblyopia that can be deployed using virtual reality goggles or a portable iPod Touch device.
