Fatigue Crack Initiation

Fatigue crack initiation is the formation of a small crack in a material after repeated or fluctuating loading, marking the earliest stage of fatigue failure in engineering structures. Cyclic stresses cause localized plastic deformation at stress concentrations, surface defects, inclusions, or persistent slip bands, where damage accumulates until a crack nucleates. The process depends on stress amplitude, load cycles, material microstructure, surface condition, and environmental exposure. Understanding fatigue crack initiation supports component design, materials selection, life prediction, and inspection strategies for aircraft, vehicles, bridges, machinery, and other structures subjected to repeated service loads.

Fatigue of Metals

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA The importance of studying metal fatigue in civil infrastructure projects was brought into the spotlight by the collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia in 1967. The eyebar-chain suspension bridge over the Ohio River collapsed during evening rush hour, killing 46 people as a result of the failure of a single eyebar with a small 0.1-inch defect. The defect reached a...

Digital image correlation is used in fatigue tests on a resonance testing machine to detect macroscopic cracks and monitor crack propagation in welded specimens. Cracks on the specimen surface become visible as increased strains.

The Treadmill Fatigue Test: A Simple, High-throughput Assay of Fatigue-like Behavior for the Mouse

Fatigue is a common, undertreated and frequently poorly-understood symptom in many diseases and disorders. New preclinical assays of fatigue may help to improve current understanding and future treatment of fatigue. To that end, the current protocol provides a novel means of measuring fatigue-like behavior in the mouse.
