Fiber Volume Fraction

Fiber volume fraction is the proportion of a fiber-reinforced composite’s total volume occupied by reinforcing fibers, a key parameter for predicting and controlling material performance. It is calculated by dividing fiber volume by the combined volume of fibers and matrix, with changes in fiber content influencing load transfer, stiffness, strength, density, and manufacturing behavior. In engineering, designers use fiber volume fraction with constituent properties and composite models, such as the rule of mixtures, to estimate directional mechanical responses. Measuring and controlling this fraction helps optimize structural components, prevent resin-rich or poorly consolidated regions, and balance performance, weight, cost, and processability.

This protocol describes real-time iontophoresis, a method that measures physical parameters of the extracellular space (ECS) of living brains. The diffusion of an inert molecule released into the ECS is used to calculate the ECS volume fraction and tortuosity. It is ideal for studying acute reversible changes to brain ECS.

Fractional Distillation

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...

Tension Test of Fiber-Reinforced Polymeric Materials

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Fiber-reinforced polymeric materials (FRP) are composite materials that are formed by longitudinal fibers embedded in a polymeric resin, thereby creating a polymer matrix with aligned fibers along one or more directions. In its simplest form, the fibers in FRP materials are aligned in an orderly, parallel fashion, thus imparting orthotropic material characteristics, meaning that the material...

In Vivo Single-Fiber Recording of Sciatic Nerve C-Fibers in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a single-fiber recording of C-fiber nerve conduction in rats. An anesthetized rat is incised to expose the sciatic nerve, which provides sensory and motor supply to the lower limbs. The individual C-fibers are then exposed. Electrical stimulation is provided using stimulus electrodes implanted in the foot, and a response is recorded from a single nerve fiber.
