Perpendicular Offsets

Perpendicular offsets are right-angle measurements from a survey line or baseline to nearby points, allowing the position of boundaries, structures, and other site features to be recorded accurately. In chain surveying, the surveyor establishes a straight chain line, locates a point along it, and measures the shortest distance to the feature at 90 degrees, often using a cross-staff, optical square, or line ranger. These offsets provide a simple geometric method for plotting details on a plan, checking alignment, and setting out engineering works. Their accuracy depends on clearly defined stations, well-maintained perpendicularity, and careful distance measurement.

Perpendicular-Axis Theorem

2025

The perpendicular-axis theorem states that the moment of inertia of a planar object about an axis perpendicular to its plane is equal to the sum of the moments of inertia about two mutually perpendicular concurrent axes lying in the plane of the body. Consider a circular disc of mass M and radius R lying along an x-y plane. The origin lies at the center of the disc, and the z-axis is perpendicular to the disc's plane. All three axes coincide at the disc's center. The moment of inertia of this...

2017

The control of chemical and oxygen gradients is essential for cell cultures. This paper reports a polydimethylsiloxane-polycarbonate (PDMS-PC) microfluidic device capable of reliably generating combinations of chemical and oxygen gradients for cell migration studies, which can be practically utilized in biological labs without sophisticated instrumentation.

2018

Here we present a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system based on a ground-coupled, densely populated antenna array for monitoring the dynamic process of subsurface water infiltration. A time-lapse radar image of the infiltration process allowed estimating the depth of the wetting front during the course of the infiltration process.

The sensitivity gain inherent to ultrahigh field magnetic resonance holds promise for high spatial resolution imaging of the heart. Here, we describe a protocol customized for functional cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) at 7 Tesla using an advanced multi-channel radio-frequency coil, magnetic field shimming and a triggering concept.
