Reactive Nanocomposites

Reactive nanocomposites are engineered materials that combine a continuous matrix with nanoscale constituents that chemically react during processing or service, enabling properties beyond those of conventional composites. Their performance depends on nanoscale dispersion, interfacial interactions, and reactions such as polymer curing, crosslinking, or surface functionalization, which can strengthen bonding between the matrix and nanofillers. Engineers use reactive nanocomposites to tailor mechanical strength, thermal stability, electrical behavior, barrier performance, and responsiveness while limiting material weight. These materials support advances in structural components, protective coatings, energy devices, sensors, and other applications where controlled chemistry and nanoscale architecture determine reliability and function.

We demonstrate the preparation of siloxane-based and epoxy-based liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and LCE nanocomposites. The LCEs are characterized with respect to reversible strain, liquid crystal ordering, and stiffness. As a potential application, we demonstrate their use as shape-responsive substrates in a custom device for active cell culture.

Detecting Reactive Oxygen Species

2023

Reactive oxygen species are chemically active, oxygen-derived molecules capable of oxidizing other molecules. Because of their reactive nature, there are many deleterious effects associated with unchecked ROS production, including structural damage to DNA and other biological molecules. However, ROS can also be mediators of physiological signaling. There is accumulating evidence that ROS play significant roles in everything from activation of transcription factors to the mediation of...

2014

Three-dimensional (3D) microstructured composite beams are fabricated through the directed and localized infiltration of nanocomposites into 3D porous microfluidic networks. The flexibility of this manufacturing method enables the utilization of different thermosetting materials and nanofillers in order to achieve a variety of functional 3D reinforced nanocomposite macroscopic products.

Reactivity of Enols

2023

Enols are a class of compounds where a hydroxyl group is attached to a carbon–carbon double bond, which implies that it is a vinyl alcohol. A carbonyl compound with an α hydrogen undergoes keto–enol tautomerism and remains in equilibrium with its tautomer, the enol form. Usually, the keto tautomer is present in a higher concentration than the enol tautomer due to the higher bond energy of C=O compared to C=C. Moreover, the direction of the keto–enol equilibrium is governed by factors like...
