Virtual Tracers

Virtual tracers are computational markers used to represent the movement and fate of substances through engineered or natural systems without introducing a physical tracer. In numerical models, they are released into a simulated flow field and transported according to governing processes such as advection, diffusion, dispersion, and reaction, allowing researchers to follow particle paths or tracer concentrations over time. Engineers use virtual tracers to estimate travel times, residence-time distributions, mixing, and source-to-receptor connections in fluids, porous media, waterways, and treatment systems. These simulations support system design, contaminant transport analysis, process optimization, and scenario testing when experiments are costly, difficult, or impractical.

Virtual Work

2023

The principle of virtual work states that if a body is in static and dynamic equilibrium, then the sum of all the virtual work done by all external forces and couple moments for any given virtual displacement must be zero. In static equilibrium, a body can experience an imaginary or virtual movement, such as displacement or rotation. The virtual work done by a force is equal to the dot product of force and virtual displacement in the direction of the force. When it comes to virtually rotating a...
