Groundwater Flow Assessment

Groundwater flow assessment is the systematic evaluation of how water moves through subsurface materials, where it is stored, and how quickly it travels, making it essential for managing aquifers and protecting water quality. Investigators combine measurements of hydraulic head, aquifer properties, recharge, and pumping with Darcy’s law, which relates groundwater velocity to the hydraulic gradient and the permeability of the geologic medium. In environmental sciences, these assessments identify groundwater divides, predict contaminant transport, evaluate well yields, and guide remediation and sustainable water use. Field observations and numerical models can also reveal how climate variability, land use, and extraction alter subsurface flow systems.

The flow mediated dilation (FMD) test is the most commonly utilized, non-invasive, ultrasound assessment of endothelial function in humans. Although the FMD test has been related with the prediction of future cardiovascular disease and events, it is a physiological assessment with many inherent confounding factors that need to be considered.

Coronary flow reserve (CFR) is useful for assessment of myocardial oxygen demand and evaluation of cardiovascular risk. This study establishes a step-by-step transthoracic Doppler echocardiographic (TTDE) method for longitudinal monitoring of the changes in CFR, as measured from coronary artery in mice, under the experimental pressure overload of aortic banding.
